T(homas) S(tearns) Eliot (1888-1965)
Was born in St. Louis, Mo., the seventh and youngest child of a local businessman. Eliot's education was thorough and traditional and led to the completion of a thesis on the 19th-century philosopher F.H. Bradley. Eliot studied at Harvard between 1906 and 1916, as well as at the Sorbonne; Oxford and the University of Marburg in Germany. Eliot's poem "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" (1939) is the inspiration and conceptualization?? for playwright Andrew Lloyd Webber's broadway musical "Cats."
