July 18: Mortality among Children -- The report of the Board of Health for the past week, in another column, shows an unusually large mortality among children. Out of 133 deaths during the week, 88 were under 5 years of age, and of this number, 56 were under 1 year of age.

July 21: Mr. Thomas H. Blick, who has been living near the border of Lake Roland since last January, said yesterday that the lake should be either cleaned out or abandoned. "It seems rather singular," he said, "that the city is assuming such risks in neglecting to dredge Lake Roland. Any one possessing reasonable judgment, seeing the mud covering about one-fifth of the lake's surface, with dead fish and animal matter exposed to the scorching sun, can render but one decision -- that it is unhealthful."

July 23: Charging that national American Legion officials have failed to answer his questions about how Negro members would be treated at the Legion convention in Miami in October, A. Briscoe Koger, commander of Walter Green Post No. 14, yesterday urged all Negro legionnaires and veterans to boycott the Miami session.
