Gov. Parris N. Glendening has appointed John B. Franzone as chairman of the Maryland Racing Commission.
Former chairman E. William Furey, who served two straight one-year terms, the legal limit, remains on the nine-member board.
Franzone, a member since 1996, has owned thoroughbreds since 1987.
Meanwhile, the Virginia Racing Commission approved amended dates for a 25-day Colonial Downs thoroughbred meet: Sept. 7 to Oct. 11. Horses will race at the southern Virginia track 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 4 p.m. Monday.
The commission also demanded that track management spend at least $400,000 for marketing and promotion.
