July 14: -- CHESTERTOWN, MD., July 13 -- Ladies of Chestertown this morning organized "The Ladies" Town Improvement Association." The object is to undertake the improvement of the to large squares in the business centre of the town, which have for years been unsightly and unimproved.

50 years ago in The Sun

July 16: -- Washington, July 15 (AP) -- General of the Armies John J. Pershing who in his 87 years had fought Indians and led American forces to victory in World War I, died today. The country's flags were lowered to half-staff in grateful respect, by presidential order. Death, which had hovered near the ailing old soldier for many months, came quietly in the pre-dawn hours.
