U.S. Foodservice Inc. said yesterday that it has purchased a building in Columbia to serve as the food distributor's new headquarters beginning in October.

The 97,250-square-foot, three-story building will accommodate the staff of 235 that currently occupies two buildings in Columbia that serve as the company's headquarters.

The building will also provide room for growth, said Bonnie Walker, the company's spokeswoman.

The building and the relocation are expected to cost nearly $20 million.

U.S. Foodservice, which changed its name in February from JP Foodservice Inc., has been based in Columbia for four years, since moving there from Hanover, Walker said.

After its $1.4 billion acquisition of Rykoff-Sexton Inc. in December, U.S. Foodservice began leasing a second building in Columbia to expand its headquarters staff.

The acquisition made U.S. Foodservice the nation's second-largest company in the $140 billion-a-year food-distribution business.

The building in Patuxent Woods Business Park off Route 32 was developed by Trammell Crow Co.
