The state Department of Natural Resources has added a second Saturday to the fall hunting season for wild turkey and expanded the fall hunting zone to include eastern Washington County.
The season will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7 in Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties.
Proposed dates for the 1998-99 hunting seasons, other than for deer, are listed below.
Upland game
Eastern cottontail rabbit: Nov. 7-Feb. 6 in all counties except Garrett and Allegany; bag limit four. Oct. 31-Jan. 30 in Garrett and Allegany counties; bag limit four.
Quail: Nov. 7-Jan. 15 in that portion of the state west of I-83 from Pennsylvania to I-695 to I-95 south to the Virginia line, but excluding Allegany and Garrett counties; bag limit six. Nov. 6-Jan. 15 in that part of the state east of I-83 south to I-695 to I-95 south to the Virginia line; bag limit six.
Pheasant (male only): Nov. 7-Dec. 31, all counties, one per day.
Woodchuck: Year-round in all counties, with no bag limit.
Crow: Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only from Aug. 15, 1998, to March 16, 1999; all counties; no bag limit.
Forest game
Squirrel (gray, black and eastern fox, total): Oct. 5-Jan. 30, all counties; six per day.
Squirrel (red or piney): Oct. 5-Jan. 30; all counties; no limit.
Wild turkey (fall season, either sex): Oct. 31-Nov. 7, Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties; one per season.
Wild turkey (spring season): April 17-May 15; all counties; one bearded turkey per season or, if no turkey was taken in the previous fall season, one bearded turkey per day, but two per season.
Ruffed grouse: Oct. 5-Jan. 30, all counties but Charles; two per day.
Canada geese
Migratory birds: A moratorium on hunting remains in effect.
Resident birds: Sept. 1-15 in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester and those parts of Prince George's, Howard and Baltimore counties east of I-95. Sept. 1-25 in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Montgomery and Washington and those parts of Baltimore, Howard and Prince George's counties west of I-95; bag limit five per day.
