John S. Carroll, editor of The Sun and senior vice president of the Baltimore Sun Co., was named a corporate vice president yesterday of the newspaper's parent company, Los Angeles-based Times Mirror Co.

Carroll, who retains his previous responsibilities and titles, received the corporate vice president promotion along with five other Times Mirror executives.

"We are delighted to recognize this outstanding group of executives who have played, and will continue to play, a substantial role in our performance," said Mark H. Willes, Times Mirror's chairman and chief executive. "They reflect an extraordinary depth of talent and skill, and we are delighted to recognize their leadership."

Carroll, 56, has been The Sun's editor since 1991. He began his newspaper career in 1963 and joined The Sun as a reporter in 1966, serving in Baltimore, Vietnam, the Middle East and Washington. From 1972 to 1979, he was an editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, and he later was top editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader of Kentucky, before rejoining The Sun.

Also named Times Mirror corporate vice presidents were: Janet Clayton, editorial page editor of the Los Angeles Times; Robert G. Magnuson, senior vice president for the Los Angeles Times' regional divisions; Anthony Marro, editor of Newsday; William J. Rowe, publisher of Connecticut's Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time; and Gary K. Shorts, publisher of the Morning Call of Allentown, Pa.
