Drivers urged to park at Merriweather Post for July 4 celebration

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The Fourth of July celebration at Lake Kittamaqundi could be a parking nightmare, and police suggest spectators park their cars at Merriweather Post Pavilion to avoid delays.

The celebration begins at 2 p.m. at Wincopin Circle, culminating in an alcohol-free fireworks display at 9: 30 p.m. The festivities are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Columbia.

Because hundreds of parking spaces have been eliminated at The Mall in Columbia during construction, police are expecting more traffic problems than usual. Arrive early, then walk from Merriweather to the festivities, police say. Officers will direct traffic.

"We fervently urge people to use the parking at Merriweather in order to avoid delays coming and going," said Sgt. Morris Carroll, a police spokesman.
