Royal Ahold NV, the international food retailer that is buying Giant Food Inc. for $2.7 billion, announced yesterday that Robert Zwartendijk, president and chief executive officer of Ahold USA, will step down Sept. 1. He will retire next summer.
Zwartendijk, who has been responsible for U.S. operations for the Netherlands-based company since 1989, will remain on Royal Ahold's corporate executive board until he retires to handle projects that enhance the continuing international growth of the company.
He will be replaced by Allan Noddle, president and chief executive officer of Ahold USA Support Services, Royal Ahold's supervisory board said. Noddle previously ran Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant Food Stores Inc., a Royal Ahold supermarket company.
Royal Ahold, which owns four grocery chains on the East Coast, secured control of Landover-based Giant, the Baltimore-Washington region's dominant supermarket chain, by agreeing to buy all of the voting shares from the 1224 Corp. holding company.
That deal is expected to close in September or October.
