ONE OF THE SUMMER events most eagerly anticipated by Central County families -- the annual Severna Park July Fourth Parade and Festival -- takes place at 10 a.m. on, of course, July 4.
Sponsored by the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce, the Severna Park Pride parade will assemble, rain or shine, at 9: 15 a.m. in the parking lots of St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal and Our Shepherd Lutheran churches on Benfield Road.
Participants should call for their placement and location number on July 2 or July 3. Contact Linda Zahn at 410-647-3900 or parade Chairman Lewis Heck at 410-647-2222.
Families and youngsters may register for the decorated wagon and bike contest from 9: 15 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Winkelmeyer building, 540 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. Prizes for participants are courtesy of the chamber and Be Beep-A-Toy Shop.
At 10 a.m., the parade begins its trip along Benfield to Evergreen Road, left onto Riggs Avenue and left onto Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard. Judging takes place as the parade rounds the corner at Riggs Avenue and Old Annapolis Road.
The final turn onto the drive at Sentinel Title goes into the Park Plaza shopping center, where the festival begins as the parade ends.
Parade award winners will be announced, and food, games and family entertainment will be provided.
After the festival, the Community Center at Woods is holding an open house and free swim from 1: 30 p.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Information: 410-647-5843.
It's a good thing Joe Gillespie is the parade's grand marshal. After you read a summary of his accomplishments, you'll feel as if you need a chauffeur, too.
As father of three and grandfather of 10, Gillespie's dedication to the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association (Green Hornets) in general and women's athletics in particular is legendary.
In 1972, he made girls sports a part of the Green Hornets by helping to organize girls softball and, two years later, girls basketball.
He served three terms as Green Hornet president and was also treasurer and baseball and basketball director.
Today, he serves as county liaison to the GSPAA as a member of the county Recreation and Parks Department advisory board.
At Severna Park High School, Gillespie is head coach of the girls' junior varsity basketball team and an assistant coach of girls softball.
