African-American exhibit

"Amistad: The First Decade And Beyond," a traveling exhibition of African-American art and artifacts, is coming to the African American Museum in Philadelphia Wednesday to Oct. 31.

On loan from the Amistad Foundation African-American Collection, this exhibit includes 63 objects from more than 300 years of black history. Some of the items being shown are the original liberation documents of former slaves Joshua Brown and Samuel Berry, Jim Crow signage from the 1920s directing "Colored People in the Rear," and Thomas Hovendon's photogravure of "John Brown's Last Moments Before Execution."

The museum is at 701 Arch St., Philadelphia. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. Admission is $6; $4 for children, seniors, students and disabled. Call 215-574-0380.

Celebrating freedom

Celebrate the nation's birthday at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Heritage Celebration, "Freedom's Birth: An American Experience," on Saturday. The festival begins at 10 a.m. with "A Stroll to Jefferson Park" and continues all day with other presentations by the American Theater Actors.

Features include the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment encampment seen in the movie "Glory," a prehistoric archaeology exhibit, and music by the Wildcat Regiment Band, Larry Johnson, Magpie and Kim and Reggie Harris. The Harpers Ferry Historical Association also will bring in authors who have written about the city's history.

Events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue until the fireworks display at 10:15 p.m. There is no entrance fee and there will parking available at the Cavalier Heights Visitor Center throughout the day. Parking will also be available at Bolivar Heights starting at 4:30 p.m. The Author Fest will be held at the Cavalier Heights Visitor Center, located in the park, from 2 p.m. ,, to 5 p.m. The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located off state Route 340.
