A North Laurel man was killed and a woman seriously injured when their car smashed into a tree during the weekend, police said.

About 5: 45 a.m. Sunday, a Honda Prelude driven by Russell Darnell Leverette, 21, of the 9800 block of Whiskey Run Road veered off Guilford Road near Vollmerhausen Road in Savage before hitting the tree, police said.

Rescue workers found Leverette dead at the scene and took Jennifer Bauer, 18, of Laurel to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was in serious condition last night, authorities said. Police said excessive speed contributed to the accident.
