Pilot killed in crash in Ocean City identified

The pilot who died when his single-engine aircraft crashed Sunday night at the Ocean City Airport has been identified as the operator of a charter fishing boat, said a spokesman for Ocean City police.

Officer Jay Hancock, the spokesman, said Linwood Ashley Martens, 62, of the 400 block of 14th St. reportedly was practicing landings and take-offs in his Cessna and trying to land about 10 p.m. when the aircraft crashed in a marshy area several yards parallel to the runway.

The runway lights were operating but heavy fog might have prevented Martens from seeing the runway, Hancock said. He said the crash is being investigated.

Martens, the lone occupant of the plane and owner of the charter boat Judith M., was pronounced dead at the scene.
