Star-Spangled celebration to feature musical groups, fireworks

START your family's Independence Day celebration a week early this summer at A Star-Spangled Celebration on June 27 at Anne Arundel Community College.

Sponsored by the Cultural Arts Foundation of Anne Arundel County, the outdoor festival begins at 5: 30 p.m. in the stadium with the Crabtowne Big Band, an 18-piece swing band.

The entertainment continues with the Annapolis Chorale, directed by J. Ernest Green, performing American musical theater numbers, featuring the works of Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Sons of the Severn, a 50-man a cappella chorus, and the seven-member Annapolis Vocal Corps also will perform.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, directed by Daniel Hege, closes the show at 8: 15 p.m. with a program of music by American composers. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture will be accompanied by a fireworks display.

Seating for the show, which drew 6,000 last year, will be in the bleachers or on the lawn. Concert-goers can bring blankets, chairs and refreshments, but no alcoholic beverages.

Parking will be available in the school lots, said Carol Treiber, spokeswoman for the county Cultural Arts Foundation.

For the children, there will be clowns and hands-on displays by the Chesapeake Children's Museum. Ice cream and candy will be sold.

The concert is free, but donations to the county Cultural Arts Foundation will be accepted. Rain date is June 28. Information: 410-222-7949.

Women networking

How's this for an intriguing opener -- "Ask Me About a Second Income Without a Second Job."

That's the title of the talk Katherine Owens, executive field trainer of the American Communications Network, will give at the Annapolis Women's Network on Wednesday at Deep Creek Restaurant in Arnold.

The luncheon meeting begins with a cash bar at 11: 30 a.m. Lunch is at noon.

Businesswomen from the county strengthen their careers through networking and resource sharing at the monthly meetings of the Women's Network, which is sponsored by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel.

Tomorrow is the deadline for reservations. Information: 410-626-7800.
