Review: This idyllic track, originally planned as a private country club, is Baltimore County's first all-bent grass facility. The upscale daily-fee course was carved out of 215 acres of rolling hills in northern Baltimore County. Joe Lee, a Florida-based architect whose resume includes the creation of Doral's Blue Monster, developed a design that includes five sets of tees and plays from 4,800 to 6,925 yards, a par of 36-36-72.
From the tips, the Grey Monster, which features an unconventional five par-5s and five par-3s, requires full use of your clubs. The wide, billowy fairways and fast, undulating greens are dotted and surrounded by 86 white sand bunkers and seven ponds.
Water comes into play on six holes, but the only forced layup hole is No. 3, a mid-range par-4 which requires the player to carry 131 yards over the water on the approach.
The signature is No. 4, a par-3 with a pond on the left and bunkers protecting the right side of the green. The course opens with a par-5 that is reachable in two and finishes with one that will take three shots to get home.
A lot of love and care appears to have gone into the fairways and greens but some tee areas seem to have been neglected.
