Swim teams open summer season with a splash on Saturday

SWIMMERS, take your marks! For many area swimmers, summer really begins Saturday morning when the Central Maryland Swim League opens its 1998 season.

On the opening weekend schedule, the CATS from the Crofton Swim and Tennis Club play host to the Tidal Wave of Chartridge Swim Club; the Navy Junior Seals will swim against the Waugh Chapel Seahorses at the swim club pool on Waugh Chapel Road; Crofton Country Club's Crocodiles meet the Cruisers from Country Club Estates Glen Burnie at the pool on Crofton Parkway and the Dolphins from Fort Meade meet the Dolphins from Crofton Village at Crofton Village.

All the meets are scheduled for 9 a.m. and usually last about 3 hours.

Seton softball

Because adults like to play in the summer, too, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Crofton is organizing a softball team, the Seton Spirits. Anyone 16 or older who would like to enjoy some lively softball is welcome. The first practice will be held June 23. Games against other area church teams will begin in July.

Library reading program

For a different kind of thrill, the Anne Arundel County Public Library is sponsoring a summer reading program called "Thrills and Chills at the Library."

Participating children will receive a reading logbook, coupons from area businesses and passes to attractions such as the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore, Skate Nation on Route 3 in Crofton, and SPY Aquatics swimming pool in Severna Park. The library also will present programs on percussion, storytelling, science and marine life.

Registration is being held through July 31. Information is available at your local library.

The Crofton library branch holds its opening sessions at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. This is a great chance to learn more about the program, to hear some stories and to have some fun.

Fall sports registration

And even though the summer sports season has barely begun, it's already time to think about fall sports. The Crofton Athletic Council is holding registration for its cheerleading, soccer and football programs. Registration forms are available at the Crofton Library, the Crofton Town Hall and at the Champion Realty office in the Crofton Centre.
