PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Don't be surprised if Maryland coach Dick Edell leads a movement to bring the NCAA lacrosse championship to upstate New York.

After suffering defeats in the national title game three of the past four seasons, including this one, Edell walked off the sideline with a smile on his face yesterday after his South squad held off the North, 19-18, in the 57th North-South Classic at Nazareth College.

"It's good to still be standing after the last game of the season, all of these Mondays kind of take their toll on you," Edell said.

Syracuse's Casey Powell, named Division I Player of the Year at a banquet Friday night, led the North with five goals. He scored twice in a 13-second span to bring his team within a goal with 1: 14 remaining, but the South defense knocked the ball away from Powell twice in the closing minute to preserve the victory.

Butler's D'Arcy Sweet led the South with five goals and was named the game's MVP. Maryland's Matt Hahn had two goals and an assist and the Terps' Andrew Whipple had a goal and two assists. Hopkins' Dudley Dixon also scored.

In the Division III game, the North rallied to score the final six goals to beat the South, 16-14.
