Woman run over as bus skids into shelter at stop by hospital

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 52-year-old woman was run over by an MTA bus that slid onto a curb, flattened a stop sign, hit another bus and destroyed a bus shelter early yesterday near North Baltimore's Sinai Hospital.

Carol Wheatley, whose address was not given, was in fair condition yesterday at Sinai Hospital.

Seven others, including the bus driver, were treated and released from either Sinai or Liberty Medical Center.

The driver, whose name was not released, underwent a routine drug test. The results have not been made available.

About 6: 10 a.m., the No. 44 bus had been eastbound on Belvedere Avenue and turned right into the bus loop near Sinai. The bus slid to the right, jumped the median, hit a stop sign, hit a No. 91 bus stopped in front of it and plowed into the shelter.

The cause of the accident has not been determined.
