The Dwight School (N.Y.) emerged from a crowded pack yesterday to win two tough matches and capture first place in the 3rd National Prep School Team Tennis Championships.
The Tigers beat Deerfield (Mass.), 4-2, in the morning and followed that by knocking off previously unbeaten DeMatha of Hyattsville by the same score. Dwight and DeMatha both finished at 5-1, but the Tigers got first place because of their win in head-to-head competition.
Rain forced yesterday's matches to be moved from McDonogh and split between Greenspring Racquet Club and Bare Hills Athletic Center. Singles matches were played without ads and all sets started tied at 2-2.
Dwight clinched the title with the DeMatha victory in the tournament's final match.
This was the second straight year everything came down to Dwight's final match. Last year, the Tigers missed a chance to pull into a three-way tie for first by losing to champion Greenhill, Texas.
"This year, I didn't want that," said Dwight coach Alex Kiprovski. "I thought we could win."
McDonogh, which finished fifth, had won its first three matches but lost Tuesday to Deerfield. Yesterday, McDonogh fell to DeMatha, 4-2, in its first match and then lost to Western Reserve by the same score. Chris Chiu (No. 1) was McDonogh's lone two-time winner yesterday.
"I think the tournament gets better every year," said McDonogh coach Laddie Levy, whose team handed Dwight its lone loss. "We hope we can go to 12 teams next year."
