County police released a Severna Park man yesterday after questioning him about shooting and killing an apparent intruder in his house in the 1300 block of Oak Road on Sunday night.
Donald A. Barnes, 38, was not charged, said Officer Deberah Mabe, county police spokeswoman. Barnes told police he shot John Robert Carpenter Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after Carpenter attacked him.
Police said the two men knew each other, but could not describe their relationship.
Lt. Bob Jaschik of the Criminal Investigations Division said the state's attorney's office asked investigators to look into the incident further before it decides whether to file charges.
"I don't even know if that's going to happen," Jaschik said.
Jaschik said police could not confirm a motive for the shooting. The weapon -- a shotgun -- was found in Barnes' home, police said.
Carpenter's family could not be reached for comment, and no one answered the phone at Barnes' home.
Police said they received a 911 call at 9: 35 p.m. Sunday from a man in the 1300 block of Oak Road saying there was an intruder in his home. But the call was cut off, and when the man again called 911 a short time later, he told police he had shot the intruder, police said.
When police arrived at Barnes' home in the small community between Benfield Road and the Severn River, they found Carpenter's body and Barnes, who said he fired in self-defense.
A neighbor who declined to be named said she didn't know Barnes, his wife and their children very well because they kept to themselves.
"We have a lot of community events but they never attend them," she said. "You rarely saw them."
