North County High graduates win honors, grants, scholarships

THE BALTIMORE SUN

CONGRATULATIONS to the 385 students who graduated from North County High School last week. Larger than last year's class by 62 students, the Class of 1998 has collectively garnered more than $1 million in grants and scholarships, and the money is still coming in.

"This is a very, very talented class," said Principal Patricia Gronkiewicz. "Students have made artistic and musical as well as academic and athletic accomplishments."

Valedictorian Ivy Liu achieved a 4.447 grade-point average when her advanced placement grades are counted and is headed for the University of Maryland to study chemical engineering. Salutatorian David Olds Jr. achieved a grade-point average of 4.25 and is headed for Loyola College to study business. During the graduation ceremonies, Chalia Belt was surprised with a Superintendent's Recognition Award, earned for perfect attendance for her school career.

With a 4.14 GPA, Wendy Slicker's award from the American Academy of Achievement got her a trip to the West Coast to attend a Salute to Excellence program, where she met her

sponsor, the author Tom Clancy.

Led by the junior varsity girls lacrosse team's overall grade-point average of 3.37, the overall spring semester grade-point average of the students participating in athletics was an impressive 3.0. Noting that the minimum GPA required to participate in sports is 2.0., Gronkiewicz pointed out that these student-athletes "attended practice, played games, had very little time and used it wisely."

About 60 percent of the class plan to continue their education, with 30 percent going to four-year schools, about 25 percent a two-year schools and about 10 percent trade or vocational schools.
