For most Crown All-Stars, Sunday's annual matchup of Maryland's top seniors in a seven-inning exhibition at Oriole Park at Camden Yards will be a dream fulfilled.
For Mount St. Joseph's Mark Teixeira, it may well be a prelude of things to come. Teixeira, a ninth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in Tuesday's Major League draft, will be one of seven Baltimore Sun first-team All-Metro picks to take the field after the Orioles' game against Atlanta.
While The Sun's 1998 All-Metro Player of the Year hopes to one day call the big leagues home, he said yesterday he's putting the dream on hold.
"I'm going to college," said Teixeira, who confirmed that the Red Sox have offered more than $1.2 million for him to forgo a collegiate career at Georgia Tech. "They can keep pushing the offer up and up, but I'm going to go to school right now. I just don't want to have to worry about it anymore. I called my college coach and told him I was coming to school.
"I've been talking to my adviser the last couple of weeks. He said they'll keep calling, trying to sign me. I know there's going to be a good offer on the table, but I'm going to school."
The senior, who hit .548 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs this spring, said he's looking forward to turning his attention back to baseball, as he takes the field again after nearly a two-week layoff.
Nine Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association players are on the North team, five from A Conference champion Calvert Hall. Cardinals longtime coach Joe Binder is one of three North coaches.
"We treat this game certainly as a serious game, but we're more interested in giving kids exposure and having a positive experience," said Binder. "The kids are certainly excited about playing on the same field as Cal Ripken, but we're certainly going to go out there to win and play the way the game should be played."
Formation of the teams began with four regional tryouts in mid-May, with 50-80 players per region vying for spots on one of four 20-man regional teams. The final rosters were selected by a panel after a series of games the following week at Salisbury State.
"We tried to select kids from all over the state," said Mount St. Joseph coach Dave Norton, event chairman. "I know some people believe that their conference is stronger than anyone else's, but we wanted this to be a state team."
The 20-man roster for Team Maryland also was announced. The team, which will play 11 games in eight days in Ohio and Oklahoma later this month, features second-team All-Metro picks Chris Mathias, of Westminster, and Jon Andrews, of Joppatowne.
