Expos: The team signed its first-round draft choice, shortstop Josh McKinley of Downingtown, Pa., and he took batting practice with the team before the game. He will report to Jupiter of the Gulf Coast League.

Giants: Brian Johnson has hit safely in eight straight games. The Giants swept the Reds at home for the first time since August 1993. Barry Bonds has reached base safely in 29 straight games.

Mets: Rick Reed has yielded only one run and six hits over 13 1/3 innings in his past two starts, yet has managed only a split.

Phillies: Closer Ricky Bottalico, sidelined from April 27 elbow surgery, will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.

Pirates: Jon Lieber was the second starter in as many nights to beat the Mets for the first time. He was 0-2 against them in seven games. Chris Peters was 0-5 against New York before winning 5-2 on Tuesday night. The National Weather Service determined yesterday that the vicious storm that ripped the roofs off houses overlooking Three Rivers Stadium on Tuesday night was a tornado.
