A string of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Hampstead area appears to be the work of a man who enters unlocked doors, grabs pocketbooks and money and escapes, according to police.
The incidents began April 4, and all but one occurred at homes between 9 p.m. and midnight, police said. The exception was April 15 between 7: 30 p.m. and 9 p.m. at a business in the 700 block of Hanover Pike, when someone entered a rear door and stole a gym bag, pocketbook and $601.
In at least two incidents, May 3 in the 1100 block of S. Main St. and May 20 in the 1000 block of S. Main St., the intruder was surprised by residents and fled.
The burglar was described as white, in his 20s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall with short dark hair.
Manchester: Firefighters from Lineboro assisted Manchester at 10: 18 a.m. Saturday, responding to an odor of smoke in the first block of Shaeffer Circle. Units were out 35 minutes.
