Area schools and literacy programs use volunteers to help children or adults improve reading skills. Among those in need of volunteers are:

Uplift Reading Center, 1634 Guilford Ave., Baltimore, to assist students ages 12 to 18 in reading and computer skills. Volunteers are needed from 3: 30 p.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Contact: Salah Fatah, 410-333-6777 or 410-333-3560.

Greater Homewood Adult Literacy Program, 3501 N. Charles St., serves those age 18 and older with one-on-one and small-group instruction in reading, writing, math and English for speakers of other languages. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Contact: Joanne Egan, 410-889-7927.
