There's nothing wrong with falling for a big, soppy love song -- people do it all the time. But it's no fun being bullied into tears by some big-voiced, overly emotional ballad singer. That's why Edwin McCain's single, "I'll Be," seems such a breath of fresh air. Although its sweet, waltz-time melody and tender, you-know-I-care lyrics fit the Big Ballad formula, McCain's gutsy, rough-around-the-edges performance keeps the song from slipping into middle-of-the-road drippiness. It's a soft-hearted ballad even macho men can appreciate.
