A Virginia man was killed yesterday and a passenger was fatally injured when a minibus ran off Mayo Road near Bay View Road in Edgewater, crossed a grassy area, struck a large tree and caught fire, county police said.

Jeffrey Lee McWhorter, 27, of Churchville, Va., was driving the 1988 Ford east on Mayo Road when he missed a curve shortly after 1 a.m., police said.

McWhorter died at the scene, police said.

The passenger, whom police had not identified last night, was pronounced dead at 2 a.m. at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Police said they do not know why the driver ran off the road.
