An 11-year-old Baltimore girl struck in the head by an object that shot out from under a lawn mower in Emmitsburg on Monday has died at Johns Hopkins Hospital, officials said.
Tiffany Greene was hit in the back of the head about 6: 25 p.m. Monday while helping her mother and two others do volunteer cleanup work at the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, officials -- said.
The girl's mother, Lashonna Stinson, removed the object, and Tiffany was flown to Hopkins by state police MedEvac helicopter, said Frank Buhrman, a spokesman for Mount St. Mary's College, which owns the property.
Tiffany died in intensive care about 3 p.m. Wednesday, said Gary Stevenson, a Johns Hopkins spokesman.
Buhrman said the group was working on the property as volunteers. He said it was unclear what struck the girl.
Initial reports that it was a pitchfork tine were incorrect, he said.
A search of the 30-foot-wide grassy median, which lies between the grotto and an overflow parking lot, was inconclusive, he said.
