St. Paul schools chief takes post with Sylvan

Baltimore-based Sylvan Learning Systems Inc. announced yesterday that it has hired the superintendent of public schools in St. Paul, Minn., as a regional vice president.

Curman L. Gaines, Ph.D., will start in the newly created position at the educational services company in July, Sylvan said.

"Gaines is one of the country's foremost urban educators," said Vickie Glazar, a Sylvan spokeswoman. "We have a lot of regard for his positive reputation within the education community."

Gaines will help Sylvan's contract education services division develop contracts with public school districts in the southeast region of the country, Glazar said. Part of his duties will be to establish a regional office in Atlanta.

"I wanted to stay as close to education as possible," said Gaines, 58. "Sylvan's relationship with school systems was the better match for me."

Gaines has served as St. Paul's superintendent since 1991. Before that, he was associate superintendent for four years.

Sylvan serves 16,600 students in public schools and nearly 40,000 students in private and parochial schools within 117 districts.
