Trying to save a friend, a West Baltimore man drowned yesterday afternoon in deep, chilly waters at Loch Raven Reservoir, a Baltimore County fire official said.
Battalion Chief Mark Hubbard said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, an area known as "the cliffs," about 1 1/2 miles north of Morgan Mill Road and Loch Raven Drive near Long Green, Hubbard said.
County police identified the victim as Donte Lamont Gainey, 26, of the 800 block of W. Lexington St.
According to Hubbard, Gainey and about a dozen friends from Baltimore were swimming in water 60 feet deep when one of them got into trouble and Gainey swam out to get him. The name of the other swimmer was not released.
Hubbard said the rescuer went under halfway back to the shore, and the friend he was helping made it safely back.
Gainey's friends used a cellular phone to call for help about 3:15 p.m., Hubbard said.
The crew of a state police helicopter from Martin State Airport in Middle River and divers searched for the body, county police said.
They said the body was recovered about 4:30 p.m. by divers from the Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Department.
