After reading "A Time of Wonder," go back and read some of PTC the lines that contain unusual vocabulary. See if your child can tell what the word means from its use in the story. Some examples are bay, bayberry, cove and cormorants.
Use the same technique in several parts of the story, as long as your child is enjoying the activity and having fun with guessing the meanings. There may be some words you will want to look up together in the dictionary.
It is important for beginning readers to know that they can figure out new words by listening to how they are used. It is important for them to know that there are many words they do not know because they don't live in Maine or in a fishing and boating community.
Cut and categorize
After reading "A Time of Wonder," look through some old magazines or newspapers with your child and cut out different types of transportation vehicles: cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, trains.
Next, take pieces of paper and write "Things that go on water" on one; "Things that go on land" on a second, and "Things that go in the air" on the third. Then help your child paste the pictures on the correct pages to categorize the different types of transportation.
