Randallstown's Harvey wins girls title in upset


Randallstown's Leslie Harvey defeated Jennifer Hellier of Broadneck in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to win her first girls singles title yesterday at the state tennis championships at Essex Community College. Harvey won the title as the third seed. Hellier placed third last year.

Stephen Decatur's top-seeded Chris Zielinski took the boys singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Wootton's Nitin Deodhar. It was the second straight title for Zielinski, who was a part of the winning mixed doubles team a year ago.

The unseeded team of Brian Wu and Don Nguyen of Wootton won the boys doubles title by outlasting Walt Whitman's, Mike Sobeck and Alex Abnell, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0. The girls doubles championship went to Blair's Charitha Gowda and Jodi Min, who defeated Donyell DeLancey and Camila Rassmussen of Broadneck, 6-4, 6-4.

Stephen Decator earned a second title in mixed doubles as top-seeded Katie Gibbons and Gregg Zielinski won 6-1, 6-3 over Donyell Piacente and Vinu Potti of Richard Montgomery.
