Given a shot at catcher Mike Piazza, the Orioles backed off when the Florida Marlins demanded a package of prospects Ryan Minor, Darnell McDonald and John Stephens without allowing the Orioles a chance to first sign Piazza to a contract extension. The Marlins subsequently traded Piazza to the New York Mets for outfielder Preston Wilson and pitchers Ed Yarnall and Geoff Goetz.
"The Marlins weren't open to us talking to him about a contract extension. Given the people who we would have had to give them, we didn't think that to be very prudent," general manager Pat Gillick said last night.
The Orioles would have had to give the Marlins their two highest-rated position prospects, third baseman Minor and outfielder McDonald.
A scary delay
Last night's game was delayed for 15 minutes when A's center fielder Jason McDonald suffered a moderate-to-severe concussion after he collided with left fielder Rickey Henderson during the third inning.
The play began with Harold Baines lining a shot to left-center. Henderson arrived at the ball after McDonald had gone into a headfirst dive. McDonald's head struck Henderson's right knee just as Henderson gloved the ball. McDonald fell limp and remained motionless for more than five minutes. Immobilized, McDonald was put in a neck brace before being lifted into the ambulance. X-rays on his neck and spinal column were negative.
"He was completely unconscious for 3-4 minutes," Oakland team physician Allan Pont said. "He has some amnesia, but we're hopeful he's going to be fine."
Hoiles, Rhodes hurting
Catcher Chris Hoiles suffered a bruised nerve in his right hand Friday night and has been listed as day-to-day. Hoiles underwent X-rays shortly after striking his hand on A. J. Hinch's bat while making a throw to third base.
Meanwhile, reliever Arthur Rhodes remains questionable with a pulled side muscle.
Around the horn
Eric Davis missed a third straight game because of a sore right elbow. Miller hopes to return him to the lineup today against left-hander Kenny Rogers. Joe Carter has two RBIs in his past 18 games, both on bases-empty home runs. He had 10 RBIs in his first 23 games, though he managed only one home run.
