More choices at the Inner Harbor


Look for a California Pizza Kitchen to open in Harborplace's Pratt Street Pavilion this August between the Cheesecake Factory and Wayne's Bar-B-Que. It's the first Baltimore location for the chain.

Another Donna's cafe and coffee bar will open this July in the Gallery in the Inner Harbor -- its largest location to date. Pastas, pizzas and entrees like grilled salmon will be available, along with the Cal-Ital sandwiches and salads the coffee bars are known for.

"It's probably our most ambitious menu," says owner Donna Crivello.

A kiosk on the second floor will serve pastries and coffee at breakfast, while the cafe in back will have lunch and dinner.

Also at the Gallery: Salad Creations, featuring made-to-order salads, has just opened. Eat at Joe's, part of a chain of "classic American diners," is coming this summer.

New at the Hilton

New at the Baltimore Hilton and Towers (20 W. Baltimore St.) is the Lord Baltimore Grill, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It replaces Sausalito. The space has been completely renovated, and the decor is now quite contemporary.

The Lord Baltimore Grill's menu is American with an emphasis on local seafood; specialties include jumbo lump crab cakes, pan-seared rockfish, filet mignon and char-grilled pork loin. In charge is the hotel's new executive chef, Michael Coppola, who graduated with honors from the Culinary Institute of America and was executive chef of Back Bay restaurants in Boston before he came to Baltimore.

Annapolis hot spot

Annapolis' new Mexican restaurant must be doing something right. The lines are snaking out the door at El Toro (50 West St.). The modest spot serves authentic Mexican food at modest prices -- lunch tops out at $5.75; and the most expensive dinner is $11.

Cheap, artistic Ikea

With all the new places to eat in White Marsh Mall and the Avenue at White Marsh, one of the best for a quick, cheap meal is still the Ikea Cafeteria, located on the second floor of the Swedish home-furnishings store. The kitchen shows a remarkable amount of artistry in preparing the food. For instance, a recently enjoyed open-faced shrimp and sliced-egg sandwich, priced at $3.75, was beautifully garnished with thin slices of cucumber and lemon and a sprig of fresh dill.

Artsy City Cafe

Check out the City Cafe's new smoke-free bar (Eager and Cathedral streets). It's a work of art, with brushed aluminum and stainless-steel walls, a concrete bar in a serpentine shape with a copper front and halogen lighting. There's seating for 30 with bar stools, bar tables and banquettes.
