South River announced the hiring of Joseph Acqui as the varsity girls soccer coach, replacing Will Pharr.
Acqui played at Bowling Green University, was a member of the Liberian national team and also worked with the women's program at the University of Maryland. He promises to bring a Brazilian style of play to South River next fall.
The Seahawks came into their own in the 1996 season under Pharr, sharing the Class 2A-3A state crown after a scoreless tie with Liberty in the final. They finished the season with a 13-1-3 mark and Pharr was named Anne Arundel's Coach of the Year.
Last fall, the Seahawks were once again co-state champs, sharing the crown with River Hill after playing to a 1-1 tie.
