For Liberty's Shen Poehlman and the North Carroll doubles team of Brooke Foster and Heather Easter, the wait was worth it.
After rain postponed the Carroll County tournament for nearly a week, Poehlman won her third consecutive singles championship and the Foster-Easter duo captured its second straight doubles title yesterday at North Carroll.
Poehlman, believed to be the first winner of three straight girls singles titles, paid back North Carroll's Charis Fulton for a loss last week with a 7-5, 6-0 championship victory.
Fulton, who plays No. 1 for North Carroll, surprised Poehlman with a 6-1, 6-2 victory last week. The North Carroll junior dominated that match with her play at the net, but yesterday Poehlman (12-3) took that away from her with a variety of lobs and well-placed shots. Fulton often came to the net yesterday but was unable to do much.
"I had to keep it away from her," said Poehlman. "I was just trying to make her mess up. I'm a senior, and I didn't want to go down in my last county match losing."
Said Fulton, who could meet Poehlman in the region meet: "I lost my concentration, and I couldn't get it back. I've got to stay focused."
Foster and Easter had little trouble with focus throughout the tournament. They had a first-round bye, won 10-1 in the second round, and by 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
In the finals, they needed only 45 minutes to breeze past Amanda Bange and Becky Bradley of Liberty, 6-1, 6-0. Foster and Easter now have a 17-0 record heading into the region tournament.
The boys doubles championship pairing of Zakk Ballard and Derek Favreau also was rolling. They were South Carroll's top two singles players this season and decided to pair up for the post-season.
They defeated North Carroll's Justin Zukowski and Russell Iseminger, 6-3, 6-2, for the title, having won 35 of 45 previous games in the tournament.
South Carroll also won the mixed-doubles title. Tracey McElroy and John Luster defeated Francis Scott Key's Erin Dougherty and Stuart Israel, 6-4, 6-1. Mixed doubles isn't played in regular-season county matches.
Craig Gordon (14-5) gave North Carroll its second championship with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Andy Mangle of Liberty in the boys singles final. The top two finishers in each division now go to the regionals, starting today at North and South Hagerstown.
