Blue Jays: Juan Samuel is eighth among active stolen base leaders with 385. Jose Cruz pinch ran for Jose Canseco in the seventh. Cruz missed the last two games after suffering a serious allergic reaction. After pitching last night, Roger Clemens went home to Texas to see his wife, who is ill.

Devil Rays: Tampa Bay purchased the contract of third baseman Scott McClain from Triple-A Durham and designated relief pitcher Dan Carlson for assignment. McClain is the 12th rookie to play for Tampa Bay. Only the Florida Marlins, with 18, have more. Fred McGriff went 0-for-4, finishing Tampa Bay's seven-game homestand 1-for-29.

Tigers: At one point in the early innings, there were four people sitting in the large upper-deck bleachers of Tiger Stadium.

Twins: Minnesota is 2-15 when the opponent scores first.
