PGA Tour

Byron Nelson Classic

Site: Irving, Texas.

Schedule: Today-Sunday.

Course: TPC at Las Colinas (6,899 yards, par 70) and Cottonwood Valley (6,846 yards, par 70).

Purse: $2.5 million.

Winner's share: $450,000.

TV: USA (Today-tomorrow, 4-6 p.m.) and ABC (Saturday, 2-4: 30 p.m.; Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).

Last year: Tiger Woods won the third of four 1997 titles, closing with a 2-under 68 to match Ernie Els' 1995 tournament record of 17-under 263.

Last week: Woods ended a 10-month winless streak on the PGA Tour, winning the BellSouth Classic at Duluth, Ga.

Skinny: With last week's victory, Woods regained the No. 1 spot in the World Ranking from Els. David Duval, a five-time winner in his last 13 starts, withdrew Monday. Byron Nelson won a record 11 consecutive events in 1945. He also had a record 18 victories and 68.33 scoring average that year.

LPGA Championship

Site: Wilmington, Del.

Schedule: Today-Sunday.

Course: DuPont Country Club (6,386 yards, par 71).

Purse: $1.3 million.

Winner's share: $195,000.

TV: The Golf Channel (Today-tomorrow, 3-5 p.m. and 9-11 p.m.; Saturday, 9-11 p.m.) and CBS (Saturday-Sunday, 4-6 p.m.).

Last year: Chris Johnson won her first major title, holing an 8-foot par putt on the second hole of a playoff with Leta Lindley.

Last week: Barb Mucha won the Sara Lee Classic at Nashville, Tenn., holing a 12-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff with Nancy Lopez, Donna Andrews and Jenny Lidback.

Skinny: Pat Bradley, the 1986 winner, is the only player with victories in the four current major championships. She won the U.S. Open in 1981, the Dinah Shore in 1986 and the du Maurier Classic in 1980, 1985 and 1986. Beth Daniel, a 32-time tour winner who won the 1990 tournament, needs a victory in a major or three regular events to reach the Hall of Fame.

Course: Loch Lloyd Country Club (6,539 yards, par 70).

Purse: $1 million.

Winner's share: $150,000.

TV: ESPN (Tomorrow, 3-5 p.m.; Saturday, 5: 30-7 p.m.; Sunday, 3-5 p.m.).

Last year: Bruce Summerhays won his first senior title, parring the second hole of a playoff with Hugh Baiocchi.

Last week: Jim Dent successfully defended his title in the Home Depot Invitational at Charlotte, N.C., beating Bob Charles with a par on the second hole of a playoff.

Skinny: Hale Irwin, a Missouri native who lives in nearby Frontenac, is skipping the tournament. A three-time U.S. Open champion, he has a tour-high three victories this year and earnings of $1,051,850. He tied for 47th last week in the PGA Tour's BellSouth Classic.
