An Edgewater couple who lost their fight to force school officials to ban Maya Angelou's book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" say they plan to appeal their case to Anne Arundel County Superintendent Carol S. Parham.
Barry and Sharon Taylor filed a complaint about the book, which ninth- and 11th-graders read, in December. They said the book was too sexually explicit for students and that the students' reading of it violated the school code of conduct, which forbids profanity.
Parham pulled the book from ninth-grade classes until last month, when a 13-member school committee reviewed the Taylors' complaint and voted to reinstate the book.
Parham would have 15 days to decide.
If the Taylors were not satisfied with her decision, they could appeal it to the county school board and then to the state school board.
