Neighbors of Francis Scott Key High School are appealing a decision allowing the school to discharge effluent from a new septic waste treatment plant to a tributary of Little Pipe Creek.

The Maryland Department of the Environment approved a permit in April for the school to discharge up to 17,000 gallons of treated effluent daily into the unnamed stream.

Bark Hill Road residents protested at a January public hearing that they should have been notified individually of the school system's plan. Many had not seen a legal advertisement. They also raised concerns about pollution.

The appeal requires MDE to decide within 60 days whether to schedule a hearing where neighbors could argue that the discharge would harm them or pollute the stream.

Fire

Pleasant Valley: Firefighters responded at 7: 23 a.m. Friday for a child locked in a vehicle on Old Taneytown Pike. Units were out 24 minutes.

Taneytown: Firefighters from Harney and companies from Littlestown and Kingsdale in Adams County, Pa., assisted Taneytown at 11: 06 a.m. Friday, responding to a trash fire in the 3100 block of Blacks Schoolhouse Road. Units were out 23 minutes.
