Victory Gallop takes ride out of picture at Pimlico Trainer says Belmont next for Derby runner-up; Preakness notebook

The entrance of Coronado's Quest into the Preakness meant the exit of Victory Gallop, second in the Kentucky Derby.

Elliott Walden, trainer of Victory Gallop, said yesterday that his colt will wait for the Belmont Stakes.

"I was waiting on Shug's decision," Walden said. "I had made up my mind that if he went, I didn't want to come back in two weeks against him."

Monk's Falcon out

The connections of Chilito, Basic Trainee, Spartan Cat and Black Cash remained undecided. But Billy Hill, owner of the Maryland-bred Monk's Falcon, said his horse won't run in the Preakness.

"Monk hasn't been 100 percent since the Tesio," Hill said. "He didn't bounce back as quickly as we'd hoped. So we're going to give him some time off. He's too good a horse to mess up."

Patrick Byrne, trainer of Black Cash, third in the Derby Trial off a long layoff, said he'll decide about the Preakness after meeting with Black Cash's owner, Frank Stronach.

"Black Cash is training so well, and he's a fresh horse," Byrne said from Churchill Downs. "He worked super in the mud here the other day.

"I would probably be most afraid of Shug's horse [Coronado's Quest]. It's not that I don't respect the Derby horses, but they have had a hard race. Second in the Preakness would be all right with me."

Early works for Zito

Nick Zito, who arrived Friday with Halory Hunter, fourth in the Kentucky Derby, said he would have preferred staying at Churchill Downs and arriving Wednesday with fellow trainers D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert.

But coming in early has worked before -- in a big way. Two years ago, Zito's Louis Quatorze won the Preakness -- and his Star Standard won the Pimlico Special and Saratoga Dandy the Sir Barton Stakes.

"We've been successful with it," Zito said. "Plus, the people in Maryland are so nice and accommodating. Why not?"
