Fairfield goal with 1: 54 left beats Mount St. Mary's, 8-7, for MAAC title


EMMITSBURG -- Chris Easterbrooks scored with 1: 54 remaining to give Fairfield the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship with an 8-7 win over Mount St. Mary's yesterday.

Fairfield (9-5, 7-0 MAAC), which is 22-0 in league games in its three years in the MAAC, led 5-2 midway through the third quarter before Mount St. Mary's (7-9, 6-1 MAAC) rallied to tie it with three straight goals, two on extra-man opportunities.

The Mountaineers took their first lead with 13: 46 to play on a goal by freshman Bryan Cole (Oakland Mills) The teams exchanged goals during the next 10 minutes before the Stags' Mike Keegan tied the score with 3: 20 to go, setting the stage for Easterbrooks' game-winner, a bouncer from 10 yards out to the right of Mount goalie Sean Elder.

The Mount, which got two goals from freshman Nick DeFelice (Towson), is awaiting word on a berth in the ECAC-ILA men's championships.
