Theatre on the Hill, a professional summer theatre company in residence at Western Maryland College, has announced its 1998 season, which begins with "The Sound of Music," one of the best-loved musicals of all time.
The schedule for the company's 17th season also includes "The House of Blue Leaves," "Gypsy" and "Aladdin." Most of the performances are scheduled for weekends, but there will be Thursday night performances in July and August.
Also, there will be a pre-opening night benefit performance for each major production. Ira Domser, associate professor of theater and producer of Theatre on the Hill, said that Carroll County charities are selected each year to sell tickets for the benefits, and that the organizations keep 100 percent of the sales.
"The Sound of Music," the inspirational true story of Maria and the von Trapp family opens the season June 19. The story features an award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein score filled with sing-along favorites such as "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things" and "Edelweiss."
"The House of Blue Leaves," a wistfully touching comedy by John Guare, will open July 11.
The play centers around Queens native Artie Shaughnessy and his Hollywood dream. He wants to be a composer for movies and move to California with his best girl, Bunny, before he is too old.
Unfortunately, he can't seem to shed his unstable wife, Bananas, or his family troubles.
"Gypsy," the vibrant backstage story of the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, caps the season and opens July 24.
Featuring a score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim that includes "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Let Me Entertain You," the show traces the rise of vaudeville and its gradual decline into burlesque.
The theater company cast gathers after most Saturday night shows for a late night cabaret. The Fabulous Post Show Revue begins after the June 27 performance of "The Sound of Music" and runs Saturdays until the end of the season.
