Mission: To collect, preserve and interpret objects and artifacts that illuminate the state's history. The museum and library are home to more than 7.5 million objects, manuscripts and rare books ranging from before settlement to the present and representing virtually every aspect of Maryland history and life. Among its collection are paintings, furniture, silver, textiles, ceramics and glass.
Latest accomplishments: The recent merger with the Baltimore City Life Museums, ending eight months of speculation on the future of the local history institution. Through the merger, the city's collection of more than 300,000 objects will be preserved and kept accessible to the public.
On the horizon: Opening May 7, "Celebrating the Baltimore City Life Collections," the first public display of the Baltimore City Life Museums' collections since that institution closed. Also, the first portion of the newly reinstalled furniture gallery opens June 5.

Stanard T. Klinefelter, president of the MHS, on the acquisition of the City Life Museums collection: "I am really excited about closing the City Life transaction and keeping the collection in Baltimore. I'm personally very excited about giving Nipper [the 44-year-old RCA mascot] a new home, but beyond Nipper there are wonderful paintings and artifacts which will enhance and complement our collection."
