Terrapins' Ogbogu is taken by Jets

University of Maryland defensive end Eric Ogbogu was drafted in the sixth round by the New York Jets yesterday, the only area player selected in the two-day event.

The 6-foot-4, 256-pound Ogbogu finished fifth in Maryland history with 18 1/2 career sacks and led the Terrapins in each of his past three seasons. He was a second-team All-ACC selection in 1997 and an honorable-mention choice in 1996.

The Jets liked him for his versatility. Ogbogu played defensive end, tight end and linebacker during his career at Maryland.

Although slowed by injuries the latter part of this past season, Ogbogu was named the South MVP at the Hula Bowl after recording four sacks to help the South win.

He was named to the 1997 ACC All-Academic Team and posted a 3.25 grade-point average in business management for the fall semester.
