O's gain 2, lose 3 in Rule 5 draft

The Orioles didn't select or lose anyone in the major-league portion of yesterday's Rule 5 draft, but they added two pitchers and lost three players in the minor-league phase.

Triple-A Rochester drafted right-hander David Spykstra (2-6, 5.71 ERA at Single-A Vero Beach) from the Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander Rachaad Stewart (1-0, 2.90 at Single-A Durham and 1-2, 8.50 at Double-A Greenville) from the Atlanta Braves. Stewart was drafted by the Orioles in 1994 and traded to Atlanta after the '95 season for pitcher Kent Mercker.

The Orioles lost first baseman Chris Kirgan (.230, 19 homers and 71 RBIs at Double-A Bowie) to Colorado's Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs; right-hander Robert Morseman (0-6, 4.79 ERA combined at Single-A Delmarva and Frederick) to Cleveland's Triple-A team in Buffalo; and first baseman Mike Wolff (.252, eight homers and 34 RBIs at Frederick) to Oakland's Double-A affiliate in Huntsville.
