Views of residents, merchants mixed on proposed business strip in Elkridge

A proposed business strip in Elkridge is drawing mixed reactions from residents and merchants.

Elkridge Village Center Inc. hopes to build a center on a 1.8-acre site on the north side of U.S. 1, between Tip Top Motor Court and McDonald's, according to Richard Blood, supervisor of the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning's plan review section.


The center would be called Elkridge Village Center. The company submitted a site development plan Aug. 7 to the planning department.

The proposal would include a Commercial & Farmers Bank with three drive-through lanes, a Jiffy Lube and a Burger King, Blood said.


Kevin Doyle, who chairs the planning and zoning committee for the Elkridge Community Association, said the group's board of directors had no objections to the plan.

"It seems like the kind of development you would expect," Doyle said. "There's always some concern with traffic, but it didn't appear to create an inordinate amount of traffic."

But Wayne Krolicki, co-owner of Nolan's Pub on U.S. 1, said he thinks the area does not need another fast-food restaurant.

"We don't want any more because that just keeps things going down," said Krolicki, who noted that a McDonald's, Taco Bell and Subway are within a mile of the proposed site. "I don't think that improves the neighborhood."

Harry Patel, owner of Snax on U.S. 1, said the business strip needs a large retailer more than another restaurant.

"We need something like a mall so that more people can come and visit the area," Patel said. "There's nothing in this area where people can shop."

A representative of the company proposing the center did not return a telephone message.
