Shortcut through the shows in Europe
In the convoluted world of fashion, dressing excitement is always at odds with the season. European designers have already jumped into next spring's idea pool, and the message is short. So short that the only difference between a bathing suit and a dress seems to be water-resistance.
* Day wear: A snappy side-buttoned jacket with matching bikini shorts is the Italian way with short tailoring at Trussardi.
* Resort wear: Wispy lace is made up into a handkerchief-size skirt with contrasting tank and sweater at the Paris house of Guy Laroche.
* Evening wear: Covered up on top, bare on the bottom is the rhinestone-studded glamour direction at Moschino. Sparkle sunglasses complete the look.
A new fashion star
She was born to go platinum. Stella McCartney, daughter of Sir Paul and Linda, presented her first fashion collection for the French house of Chloe. Mom and dad and Ringo cheered, the fashion press applauded and she's off to a running start.
The Beatles baby, who's 25, is one of a handful of young British designers who are taking over the creative reins at prestigious French fashion houses. It's a blast of fresh air. McCartney's first collection was feminine and charming, not unlike the appeal of a BBC costume epic.
Her celebrity parents may have got her a foot in the door, but she has now proved her talent.
