Pirates and watermen

The ghost of Blackbeard rises from the briny deep this Saturday at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Va., during "Fall Fest '97: Pirates in the Park."

Highlights of the "Fall Fest" include examples of classic seaworthy craft in the Antique Boat Show and demonstrations by Chesapeake Bay watermen. Local artisans and sailors will be plying their wares, and Eastern Shore artist Guy Crittenden will display award-winning artwork that chronicles life on the Bay. In addition, the history of Chesapeake Bay piracy will be discussed at 3 p.m.. Registration for the festival's 5K run begins at 7 a.m.; six age groups will compete in the run for prizes. Food and children's activities will be offered all day.

The Mariners' Museum is at 100 Museum Drive in Newport News. "Fall Fest '97" begins with the 5K run at 8 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. Admission to all festival events is free. Call 757-596-2222.

Oyster festival

Have oysters any way you want them this weekend at the 31st Annual St. Mary's County Oyster Festival. The National Oyster Shucking Championship on Saturday and Sunday features champion shuckers from more than 10 states, while the National Oyster Cook-Off on Saturday allows festival-goers to sample recipes from oyster chefs. Arts and crafts, carnival games, continuous live entertainment from country/jazz bands and free shucking lessons give the festival a down-home flair. Seafood is not the only thing on the menu, as a wide variety of soups, sandwiches, barbecue, desserts and beverages also will be available.

The 31st Annual St. Mary's County Oyster Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday at the county fairgrounds off Route 5 in Leonardtown. The festival grounds are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Admission is $3 for adults, free for children 12 and under. Call 301-863-7789.
