Last game: 21-16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.
Highlights: RB Stephen Davis came off the bench in the first quarter and punished the Cowboys for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, taking a lot of pressure off Gus Frerotte (12 of 23, 155 yards, one TD). The entire Redskins defense was outstanding, with CB Cris Dishman passing one test after another against Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and company. FS Stanley Richard racked up 11 tackles, and LBs Marvcus Patton and Ken Harvey had big sacks.
Lowlights: The Redskins became conservative in the second half after bolting to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter. "We backed off in the second half, and that's not the way we play football," said Frerotte. Brian Mitchell's fumble at the Washington 18 helped Dallas get back in the game with 4: 26 left in the third quarter, when Dexter Coakley picked up the ball at the 16 and ran in for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-9.
News: The Redskins learned yesterday they will be without RB Terry Allen and WR Michael Westbrook for two to four weeks. Both have sprained medial collateral ligaments in their left knees, with Westbrook's injury considered more serious. It is the same knee that Westbrook, the team's No. 1 draft pick in 1995, has injured several times in his three years. But Redskins trainer Bubba Tyer insisted that Westbrook's left knee isn't chronic. "There is some laxity in the medial collateral and posterior cruciate," Tyer said. "He just keeps getting hurt."
Next game: At Tennessee, Sunday, 1 p.m., in Memphis. Fewer than 20,000 people are expected to be there.
Norv Turner says: "I feel for Michael Westbrook. He's been working awfully hard, and he made two fine catches early against Dallas before getting hurt. Going in, I thought Michael was going to have a good game like last year when he caught seven passes against San Francisco."
Injuries: DE Kenard Lang (ear infection), S Jesse Campbell (broken thumb), DT Chris Mims (abdominal strain), T Ed Simmons (chronic knee), FB Marc Logan (groin)
Quotable: "They [Cowboys] didn't even say hello to me until after the game." -- Redskins CB Darrell Green, when asked about trash-talking with the Dallas players during Monday night's game.
